Hacksaw Ridge is based on a true story about a WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss (actor: Andrew Garfield) who volunteered to join the military and served during the Battle of Okinawa. Private Doss refused to carry or use any weapon and was determined to only save lives. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, and even won the Congressional Medal of Honor without ever firing a single shot.
